Pertussis, known more commonly as Whooping Cough, has reached epidemic levels in Washington State, where I live and practice. Some people may wonder what this means to them. Attitudes about this particular disease can vary greatly represented bythe following range of questions: Isn't this a treatable illness? Should we all be wearing masks in public? What's the big deal? Isn't this just another example of media hype? How can anyone choose not to vaccinate their children or themselves? Do I really need the booster vaccine? Does my child really need the booster vaccine? Should I go to the doctor for my cough? Aren't there risks with the vaccine? Do people really die from pertussis?

Please continue reading if you are interested in factual and practical information about Pertussis, including what you should do to protect yourself and family if you are not vaccinated against this highly contagious infection. The more educated we are, the more likely we will be to take measures that stop the spread of this disease.

Most women have heard by now that breast-feeding is the best and most economical option for babies in order to ensure adequate nutrition, but there are more benefits that may be new to some or a good reminder of why breastfeeding is so important. I have listed five benefits supported by research. There are many more benefits as well. Please feel free to comment with additional breastfeeding benefits (be sure to cite a source, either an article from a reputable site or a primary research study), and I will post your comment.

Finally, scientists and academics are giving credence to the claims that food dyes may be a trigger for hyperactivity in children. This is not a huge surprise to many parents who have eliminated artificial colorings from their childrens' diets and noticed an improvement in behavior, but why does it take so long for scientists to acknowledge what these parents have witnessed? What should parents do with this information? And what, if anything, will the FDA do?

Infant colic is perhaps one of the most frustrating and tiring conditions parents of infants may face. A baby who has true colic will often affect the physical, mental, and emotional health of the whole family if healthy coping strategies are not in place. While there is certainly no guaranteed cure for colic, there are a number of natural treatments (for infant and parents) that may help everyone survive this difficult phase with their health and sanity in tact.

Whether you are motivated by money saved not having to buy disposable diapers, the fact that your child will be able to attend the top preschool on your list, or the mere accomplishment of passing one more milestone in parenthood, chances are that you may have to overcome some obstacles when it comes to toilet training. Before you can think about toilet training your child, you should be sure that they are physically ready for the task and it helps if they are in an emotionally agreeable state as well.

Despite the fact that most ear infections are caused by viruses or a result of allergies, many doctors prescribe antibiotics rather than spend extra time educating parents on how to comfort their sick child or prevent recurrent infections.

Celiac Disease, also known as Celiac Sprue, is caused when the body recognizes gluten as a toxic substance and eventually results in changes to the intestinal tract, making it more difficult to properly absorb nutrients. Common digestive symptoms include abdominal pain/cramping, diarrhea, constipation, pale stools, bloating, and decreased appetite. Besides the digestive symptoms associated with Celiac Disease, the latest research indicates that a number of people may have other manifestations of the disease that present before the changes to the gut are detectable. These symptoms include depression/irritability (presenting as behavior problems in children), rashes, sores in the mouth, muscle pain, joint pain, tingling/numbness in extremities, fatigue, weight-loss or difficulty gaining weight, stunted growth, and rash.

A recent Associated Press report from London titled, "Alternative Medicines Sometimes Dangerous for Kids" suggests that Alternative Treatments (such as homeopathic medicines) may result in death, in rare cases.
This information is certainly enough to catch the attention of many parents who use natural or alternative medicines for their own children and potentially scare some into avoiding what may be a perfectly safe and effective treatment, if used appropriately. The article put out by the AP fails to mention the many deaths each year caused by appropriately prescribed pharmaceutical medications, not to mention the risks associated with certain commonly used conventional pediatric medications.
